The Inspiration

  1. Rainbow Rails was inspired by a beloved pet memorial created by artist Amy Wald in Lake Lure North Carolina called the ‘Rainbow Bridge.’ Amy’s bridge was based on a poem of the same name written by Edna Clyne-Rekhy in 1959. Hundreds of pet owners from around the state celebrate the memory of their pets by hanging their collars on the bridge railings. Rainbow Rails is an adaptation of the same sentiment, as many parks, including Rockford Park, do not have a physical bridge or a practical place for one.

Gazebo Adaptation

Situated in Rockford Park, the existing hexagonal gazebo adjacent to the dog park lends itself naturally to a short walk toward a quiet space of reflection and discovery. Once installed, the railings will create a natural “gallery” for dog collars to hang along the interior, allowing visitors to circulate through the space and experience the heartfelt stories represented there.

Most importantly, the space engages community involvement, making it both an individual and collective form of expression, conversation and connection.

By a fitting coincidence, the Delaware Art Museum is located a short walk away.

About The Logo

The Rainbow Rails logo and iron railings were designed to match the black powder-coated memorial benches found throughout the park. The logo itself was designed to evoke the special bond between pet owners and their pets, and reflect the space dedicated to celebrating those bonds.

At first glance, the logo conveys the form of a dog intently sitting up while also suggesting the letter “R” for Rainbow Rails.

Its minimal lines were designed to allow room for personal meaning and interpretation. Just as every collar placed on the rails tells a personal story, the logo is intended to accompany each owner’s own emotions, memories, and journey.
